Use of Imaging Studies for Low Back Pain (LBP)
HEDIS® is a widely used set of performance measures developed and maintained by the NCQA. These are used to drive improvement efforts surrounding best practices.
This HEDIS measure looks at the percentage of members 18 to 75 years of age with a principal diagnosis of low back pain who did not have an imaging study (plain X-ray, MRI, CT scan) within 28 days of the diagnosis January 1 to December 31 of the measurement year.
The measure is reported as an inverted rate. A higher score indicates appropriate treatment of low back pain (for example, the proportion for whom imaging studies did not occur).
