Initiation and Engagement of Substance Use Disorder Treatment (IET)

HEDIS® (Healthcare Effectiveness Data Information Set) is a widely used set of performance measures that the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) developed and maintains. These measures are used to drive improvement efforts surrounding best practices.

The Initiation and Engagement of Substance Use Disorder Treatment (IET) measure looks at the percentage of new substance use disorder (SUD) episodes that result in treatment initiation and engagement. Two rates are reported:

  • Initiation of SUD treatment. The percentage of new SUD episodes that result in treatment initiation through an inpatient SUD admission, outpatient visit, intensive outpatient encounter, partial hospitalization, telehealth visit or medication treatment within 14 days November 15 of the year prior to the measurement year to November 14 of the measurement year.
  • Engagement of SUD treatment. The percentage of new SUD episodes that have evidence of treatment engagement within 34 days of initiation.
