Required: Cultural competence training

Beginning January 1, 2024, Empire became Anthem. This article, published under the former brand, now applies to Anthem.

To ensure the cultural competence of our provider network, all Empire BlueCross BlueShield HealthPlus (Empire) contracted/participating providers must certify, on an annual basis, completion of the state-approved cultural competence training curriculum, as required for all participating provider staff who have regular and substantial contact with our members. With this training, participating providers will be positioned to offer more effective care delivery to our members and decrease health disparities.

The New York State Department of Health has approved the cultural competence training offered by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health education program, Think Cultural Health. The training is online and can be accessed at https://hclsig.thinkculturalhealth.hhs.gov.

Upon completion, all contracted/participating providers are required to share certification with Empire by the end of the calendar year. Upon training completion, please sign  the attached attestation and return to Empire via email at: NYculturalcompetency@empireblue.com.

Provider groups can certify at the group level with one attestation form submitted for all providers in their practice; however, all provider names and national provider identifier (NPI) numbers are required to be listed on the attestation form or have a roster attached.

If you have any questions regarding this requirement, please contact OMCmail@health.ny.gov.
