Syphilis, including congenital cases, on the rise in New York
Beginning January 1, 2024, Empire became Anthem. This article, published under the former brand, now applies to Anthem.
On January 25, 2022, the NYSDOH issued a notification reminding the medical community that there has been an increase in primary, secondary, and congenital syphilis in New York State, including New York City. Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett wrote:
The AIDS Institute strongly recommends that all partnering organizations providing services to populations most at risk to promote syphilis screening and pregnancy testing. Populations most at risk include, but are not limited to, people of and people who report drug-related risk behaviors who experience a disproportionate burden of congenital syphilis and syphilis in general. Further, providers are encouraged to discuss and re-educate staff and clients about signs and symptoms of syphilis (see resources below).
We strongly encourage Empire BlueCross BlueShield HealthPlus providers to talk with their patients about sexual health and drug use related behaviors, educate them on the risk factors for syphilis, appropriately screen for syphilis and report cases to the local health department for follow-up, including partner notification.
