BioPlus provider FAQ

Background

On February 15, 2023, the parent company of CarelonRx, Inc.,* announced the closing of its acquisition of BioPlus Specialty Pharmacy.* The acquisition of BioPlus supports our whole-health strategy and provides patients who have complex and chronic conditions with easy access to specialty prescriptions when they need them most. We plan to expand BioPlus’s service models across complex conditions so we can continue to ensure patients receive distinctive clinical expertise and service.

Questions for CarelonRx and BioPlus

What is changing?

During 2023, CarelonRx and BioPlus will continue to operate as usual as separate companies. We expect the migration and integration of services to begin in 2024. Any changes or enhancements will be communicated to you and patients prior to implementation to ensure a seamless transition.

Will BioPlus be added to CarelonRx’s specialty pharmacy networks?

Not at this time; however, CarelonRx is working toward this as an option for the future.

Will the cost for members be impacted?

No, members’ costs will not change because of this acquisition.

Do I have to change the way I send prescriptions to CarelonRx/BioPlus?

No, you should continue to send prescriptions the same way you do today, whether that is to CarelonRx Specialty Pharmacy or BioPlus Specialty Pharmacy. Future changes will be communicated to you and your patients ahead of implementation.

How will the acquisition impact limited distribution drug (LDD) access?

CarelonRx and BioPlus will continue to operate with the same LDD access that they have today. If there are any changes to LDD access in the future, we will let you know.

Will you be sending updates as the implementation details become available?

Yes, we will communicate with you periodically so you are proactively aware of any changes that may occur.

What is the relationship with CarelonRx?

We support health at every life stage, offering health plans and clinical, behavioral, pharmacy, and complex-care solutions that promote whole health.

CarelonRx is our pharmacy benefit manager (PBM). CarelonRx sits within our healthcare services brand. BioPlus’s offerings will complement CarelonRx’s capabilities and will increase our ability to provide end-to-end pharmacy services, act as a consumer advocate for integrated services, and promote affordability.

How does this acquisition benefit me and my patients?

More patients will have broader access to specialty medications and personalized support throughout the treatment journey.

Our relationship with CarelonRx will support the integration of medical, pharmacy, behavioral, and social factors that affect patients.

High levels of service, speed, and care will be maintained.
