Improving maternal mental health: new screening protocols

As a healthcare service plan, Anthem Blue Cross and Anthem Blue Cross partnership plan developed a maternal mental health program designed to promote quality and cost‑effective outcomes. As a part of that program and in accordance with Assembly Bill No. 1936 chapter 815, approved by the governor and filed with the secretary of state on September 28, 2024, Anthem Blue Cross and Anthem Blue Cross partnership plan will cover the following services related to maternal mental health:

  • During pregnancy: at least one maternal mental health screening
  • Postpartum period: at least one additional screening within the first 6 weeks
  • Further screenings: postpartum screening if deemed medically necessary and appropriate by the treating provider
